I was blog hopping when I saw Flisha's post about the new site for Dapitan City. Buklod sa Dapitan is a website of a travel agency for tourist who would like to visit my hometown Dapitan. The website is pretty simple but it is very informative as it shows the prime toursit spots of the city as well as a guide to get to Dapitan.

Christmas time and the Handuraw Festival is coming soon and most hotels and pension houses will be fully book. I suggest you book your visit early to avoid the hassle and enjoy the beautiful and historic Dapitan.

MYMP in Asia’s Latin City

One of the country’s best bands, Make Your Momma Proud or a lot famous as MYMP, performed in Zamboanga City Coliseum to an enthusiastic crowd last October 9. It was part of the grand celebration of the Zamboanga 2008 Hermosa Festival. And it was made possible by St. Joseph School (SJS) High School Batch ’83, the school jubilarian honoree this year.

MYMP is the author of the sweetest, softest and most soothing music the Philippine Music Industry could have. Pairing up the guitar work of Chin Alcantara and the most angelic voice of Juris Fernandez is truly heaven’s work. This tandem, together with their other band mates, has brought fans and listeners everywhere great music and pleasant times both with their wonderful personalities and their heart-warming songs.
The band’s female singer Julie Iris Fernandez (better known as Juris) hails from Davao and took her early education in Ateneo de Davao. She comes from a family of doctors and took BS psychology in Miriam College as a pre-medicine course. Although she graduated a BS psychology student, she pursued a career in music as a vocalist despite having no formal training in singing. Her cool and soft voice was eventually loved by the airwaves and the fans. Her quiet, simple and sweet appearance has made her appeal to the fans in their bar gigs and on TV. But despite all her success, she remains kind and fun-loving at heart. She is a great person to know and an even greater friend to have.

Chin Alcantara, born on March 12, started learning the guitar when he was 15. His talent and skill blossomed and with the support of his Dad, pursued a career in music. His musical influences are Jimi Hendrix, SRV, Mr. Big and Led Zepelin. His friendly and funny appeal makes him a crowd and fan favorite on and off the stage. He finished his college degree in communication arts in Miriam College. Here are some of his favorite things: favorite movies are Legends of the Fall and Star wars, favorite cartoon character: Sponge Bob and favorite book Thick face Black Heart.

Lupang Hinirang

I bumped to this video at Jayvee's blog. This video has indeed moved me as it reminds me of how proud I should be as a Filipino. The message of the video is very simple, yet it touches my heart.

With all the controversies surrounding the Philippines this days, I hope that we would be able to revive the patriotism and love for our country.

This rendition of Lupang Hinirang is intended for reflection. It is not meant to replace the official anthem normally played as a march.

Recently a talented and nationally known film director, Mae Paner, crafted a new and moving version of our national anthem. This unusual audio visual presentation of “Lupang Hinirang”* has been shown many times in various events and has consistently touched the hearts and minds of viewers to the point of tears of awakening and gratefulness.

Because of its consistent positive impact, PAGASA and Ehem! have decided to make this version of “Lupang Hinirang” available nationwide as a reflection piece to trigger a deeper awareness of oneself in relation to the country and encourage the emergence of positive images of the Philippine future.[source and video link]

Tita Caling’s Chocolate Cake

In celebration of its’ 25th Silver Anniversary in the cake and pastry industry, Myrna’s Bake House launched a new chocolate cake in honour of the late Congresswoman and Zamboanga City Mayor Maria Clara Lorenzo-Lobregat last October 3.
Named as Tita Caling’s Chocolate Cake, it is a premium moist chocolate cake exquisitely filled with buttered rum raisin and topped with smooth dark chocolate walnut mousse.

The formal acceptance ceremony was witnessed by her son and Zamboanga City Mayor Celso Lobregat and other top city officials at the conference room of Zamboanga City Hall. According to Mayor Lobregat, chocolate was one of her favorite desserts. Tita Caling’s trusted aide, Benita Feliciano, said the late and the first woman mayor of Zamboanga City loved the chocolate cakes of Myrna’s Bake House ever since.

Tita Caling’s cake is frosted with high quality bitter sweet chocolate (has a high cocoa content that makes it chocolaty and very tempting to the palate) according to Myrna Incocencio, founder of Myrna’s Bake House. And the top design of the cake is engraved with the initial MCLL (Maria Clara Lorenzo Lobregat) with the used of supreme white chocolate, she furthered described it.

It is so far one of the best chocolate cakes baked by Myrna’s Bake House since 1983. “Made of the finest ingredients, it has been thought passionately for a long time and had undergone several changes before the final product outcome,” the cake creator Ivy Inocencio-Simbajon said. Mayor Lobregat approved of it as it went several revisions before it was made officially presented to the public.

Simbajon described that Tita Caling Chocolate Cake is composed of two layers – the upper portion is made of smooth dark walnut mousse (that taste like soft delicious ice cream), and has a solid and firm lower base made of rich moist chocolate cake to support it.

She explained that the upper portion of the cake represents her feminine side – very cool and refined. The lower portion solid base cake represents her strong convictions and firm values in life that has made her one of the most respected and loved Zamboangueña in the history of Asia’s Latin City.

I Love Biocare

“We therefore celebrate moments of victory when such humble woods and sticks are transformed...into human beings which play with the cosmos through syllables” (Excerpt from Kiko Miranda’s Speech).

To be daring is one thing most people are afraid of being. They are afraid of taking risks, afraid of failing, afraid of the unknown. But without the proverbial mantra of “No Guts, No Glory”, man would be as stagnant as a rock.

Last October 14, at the façade of The Gallery of the Peninsula and the Archipelago of Ateneo de Zamboanga University, 24 students of Ateneo de Zamboanga University (ADZU), dared to make history and a difference. Guided by their instructor Marco Alfino “Kiko” Miranda, the students of ADZU Creative Writing and Playwriting of the Department of Mass Communication launched the first-ever all-student publication in the city entitled “Binurong Lapis”.

It is an anthology of 10 short stories and 10 one-act plays originally written by Kiko’s students in COMM324 (Creative Writing) and COMM425 (Writing for Stage). The concept of Binurong Lapis was actually taken from the native delicacy, atchara or pickled papaya. No wonder they gave bottles of atchara as give-aways to the guests - an artistic way to symbolize the title of the book.

The stories and plays, like the papaya, were given more flavors through series of writing workshops where the student’s works were sifted, edited, criticized, and dissected. Given time and the countless “ingredients” added from the workshops, their stories and plays are now ready to be served to the public, proving that to be daring, is to succeed; and to believe is to achieve, Kiko said.

Kiko always believed that Zamboanga is a melting pot of talents that are just waiting to be brewed and eventually be served. This book launch was his way of showing the Zamboangueño’s talents are now ready for the picking. All they, the talents, need is a little push, a little pinch in the butt, and a stampede of talents will definitely happen, he said.

Those who graced the events were Dr. Aireen Barrios, ADZU Dean of the School of Liberal Arts, Ed Baños, ADZU Department Chair of the Department of Mass Communication, and Cheng Ordoñez, Editor-in-Chief of Sunstar Zamboanga Online.
“Writing transforms not only the ink, not only the paper, nor the syllables, letters, norwords. It also transforms people. It changes souls,” Kiko proudly announced.

From humble lowly seemingly useless pieces of wood, the students under Kiko Miranda’s tutelage, are now transformed into links to the divine. They have made history. They have made a difference. They have created change.

Asia’s Latin City is getting to be a highly urbanized place and will be like big metropolitan cities of Makati, Cebu, or Davao someday. We are catching up with the changing lifestyles today. Where we can freely talk, plan, or simply chat with one another.

Zamboanga Dancesport Competition Year 5

It was my first time to witness the dancesport competition of Zamboanga Hermosa Festival last October 10 at the Zamboanga City Coliseum. This has been going on for the last five years under the supervision of the Zamboanga City Tourism Office.

I was totally floored and awed with the young competitors. They were so graceful in twisting their bodies and thumping around. It made the audience stomped too their feet in rhythm with the music. Simply great!

And to think that the general impression of most people only the oldies are good at this. In other countries, ballroom dancesport is a phenomenon. People of all ages and sexes are crazy about it. Dancing does not give us only fit bodies, it develops our self-discipline, self-esteem, our mind (have to think fast our next moves), and maturity of our emotions (winning is not everything here). We have to feel the music to perform well.

Top Hollywood male superstars including action stars are good dancers. It gives them agility and it can also help bear long sustenance of physical endurance for them.

Kudos should be given to City Mayor Celso Lobregat for supporting this physical art of endeavor through the coordination of the City Tourism Office.

The declared winners were: College Category – (First Place-Universidad de Zamboanga); (Second Place-Zamboanga City Polytechnic College), and (Third Place- Western Mindanao State University). High School Category – (First Place-Montessori de Zamboanga), (Second Place-Claret High School), and (Third Place-Don Pablo Lorenzo Memorial High School).

Next year, the dancsport promises to be grander and more exciting!

Kjwan performed at Musiklaban in Café Saco

Not a music lover, I was astounded for awhile when I witnessed how the contestants of the 2008 Red Horse’s Musiklaban Rock Challenge performed at Café Sacco last October 9. Banging their head and singing (for me, it was shouting) lyrics I could not understand. They were absolutely crazy I thought.

Opps - don’t tell me it’s my age since I have never appreciated rock music even I was a teenager. But that night I understood better why this music existed. I found out that it’s just another way of expressing their youthful energy and a way of releasing their angst about life for this genre of musicians.

I am glad that this alcohol beverage company is giving a legitimate outlet for our rock singers. Through a contest such as this, our rock musicians all over our country become more creative and develop closer bonding with one another. They are advocating too a strong campaign against the use of illegal drugs. And recently, I know an increasing number of Christian bands are also into rock Christian music.

Rock music is not after all hard rhythm and booze. And it was proven to me by Kjwan, the Philippine rock band that won the Asia International Music Contest held in Malaysia last year. Led by former MTV Philippines VJ Marc Abaya, Kjwan is out to conquer new heights this year with its new album being criticized as one of the bests to make a strong mark.

The band is busy this year promoting the band’s sophomore album "Two Step Marv."

The son of director Marilou-Diaz Abaya, Marc believes that his VJing and his being a rock band vocalist have essentially helped each other pull up his artistry and as a public figure. Undoubtedly he has carved a name for himself as one of the more distinctive attitudes in the biz, both as rocker and VJ.

Formed in May 2003, Kjwan released its debut album that produced the big rock hit "Daliri". Its 12-track second album was launched late last year under new label Barnyard Music, boasting the heavy love song "Pintura."

Asked about the music the group brought into doing "Two Step Marv", the eloquent crowd pleaser elaborated, "We made an effort to sound different and provide our listeners with something new. This is a more mature album, with some inputs unsafe, meaning, hindi madali ma-digest. Basically it’s still rock by nature, but the various influences we have as individuals have come into fusion that makes us say our sound now is something not being heard from other acts." He explained this in a newspaper article about him and his band.

The present lineup of Kjwan include Kelly Mangahas (bass), Jorel Corpus (guitars, percussion, vocals), J-hoon Balbuena (drums, vocals), and Boogie Romero (guitars, vocals).

Kjwan got its name from a teacher’s remark ‘kwan’, meaning ‘ano’ which had a student funnily scanning a dictionary because he thought of it as a mathematical variable. The silent ‘j’ in the word was just added for artistry; or as one of the members said, ‘artestry.’

Barrio Girl is Ms Zamboanga 2008

A girl from La Paz, Zamboanga City was hailed as the fairest of all the candidates of Miss Zamboanga 2008 last October 9, 2008 at Astoria Regency. Sherrydelle Sarreal,a call center trainer wowed the audience and the judges with her beauty and wit. Completing her entourage are the following winners:

1st runner-up: Racquel Asa
2nd runner-up: Joey Albert Short
3rd runner-up: Katrina Camoro
4th runner-up: Lenybeth Militante

Racquel Asa also won Best in Production Number and Best in Gown. Katrina Camoro went home with Best in Swimwear and Miss Photogenic awards. The Best in Corporate Attire was awarded to Joey Albert Short.

Cosechas de Zamboanga

Farmers from Zamboanga, Cotabato and Davao displayed their products during the Cosechas de Zamboanga at Plaza Pershing. The market fair ran from October 1 to 15, 2008.

During my visit at the trade fair, I was able to taste an exotic root crop called Yacon. Yacon is considered as the Apple of the Earth. It looks like a camote or ube but when it is peeled it looks like an apple. It is watery and had a very distinct taste. I was also amazed by the gigantic gumamelas.

Market! Market! in Catribo

In celebration of the Zamboanga Hermosa 2008 Festival, Catribo Complex is holding a trade fair inside its big parking space up to October 16. With variety of traders selling assorted items from clothing, novelty items, food, fruits, cosmetics, barter goods, etc., this is the version of Manila’s famous shopping paradise Market! Market! – this is Tiangge Tiangge na Catribo.

It officially opened last Sunday with VP Elago as the event’s energetic emcee and with the popular local band, Detour, giving live music entertainment. VP with his quick wits and good hosting of instant games the shoppers surely had an enjoyable Sunday evening.

I learned most of these shoppers just came from their visit from Fort Pilar. Some drop by before paying their religious homage.

What makes this marketing event special, it gives family opportunities to be closer with one another. They can shop and dine together in one of Catribo’s finest restaurants. And sing also in the shopping complex videoke bar before calling the night off. Like praying together, a family that shops, eats, and sings together too, will stay together. And it can happen right here at Catribo!

Friends and lovers also can do midnight shopping, and of course, buy early Christmas gifts to avoid the season rush all together. A cup of coffee or a bottle of beer can bring out anything under the sun topics after their shopping spree too.

Among those that first caught my pocket is the Michelle Special Bangus – that sells different kinds of bangus (milk fish) preparations specially the sought-after belly parts. Our family’s favorite – we had a satisfying bangus breakfast yesterday. The enterprising owner said the bangus came from Dagupan the Bangus Capital of the Philippines. The good news? The price is comparable to the ones being sold in our local market and groceries. But Michelle’s Bangus are more delectable and lip-smackingly good in sight (hygienically packed), smell heavenly (the aroma comes out during and after cooking), and taste (very good!).

Budgetwise also launched their new wine collections. Together with several friends, we had a sort of “mini-wine party” at Mr. Bean with three of Budget’s best wines. No – we didn’t end up as drunkards afterwards neither it was a social drinking (pa shot-shot lang). It was sort of learning the art of appreciating wines.

We animatedly talked the history of wines, where they came from, how they are made, how to store them, how to distinguish good wines using our sense of sight, smell, and taste etc. with one of the managers of Budgetwise. It was really an enlightening evening with him. Want to know about wine? Visit the wine section of Budgetwise and learn too.

My favorite, Chinito’s, one of the booth participants, brought their best cuisines and drinks. Asked why they were there? It’s a chance to serve their customers who likes to have Chinito’s in midnight they explained.

It was also the launching exposure one of the services, the Doddle, offered by the up-coming advertising and business consultancy firm, What’s On Zamboanga. A newly created company (merging new trends in information technology and business opportunities), the corporate team members (composed of dynamic young men and women) created a big wall of doddle (a mix graphic arts of drawn subjects) that caught the attention of the shoppers.

This is used in Manila trade fairs and other events to bring in the crowd. People can take pictures with the doddle as the background. Try it! Bring you camera, pose with the Catribo Doddle Board, and take your shots. In other places, they charge certain fees. At Catribo, it’s free!

Catribo Complex joins Fiesta Pilar celebration

The Catribo Complex at Buenavista street, Zamboanga City announces their activities lined up in relation to the Fiesta Pilar celebration. The number one hang out location in the city will be having a two-night foam party inside the Catribo complex on October 10 and 11. Party starts at 6:00 PM in the evening and will accelerate until dawn.

On October 12, during the Fiesta Pilar celebration, the Catribo Complex will open its Tiangge Tiangge na Catribo where visitors can find varieties of food delicacies, fruits, clothes (RTW), cosmetics, novelty items, and barter goods all at very reasonable prices. The Tiangge Tiangge na Catribo will be open from 4:00 in the afternoon to 12:00 middight from October 12 to 16, 2008.

The Catribo Complex will also feature live performances by local talents to entertain the crowd. There will also be other surprises such as games and contests wherein lots of gift items will be given away.

Everyone is invited to experience the nightly fun and excitement at Catribo Comblex, Zamboanga City's prime party destination.

La Esperanza Encendida

Last October 5, I was given the chance to watch the stage play "La Esperanza Encendida" (The Burning Hope) at the Ateneo de Zamboanga University Brebeuf Gymnasium. The play resolves on the stories of nine children who battled the claws of poverty and illeteracy as they are exposed to the harsh realities of the world. In the midst of their problems, a group of social workers provided them with help in sending these kids to school and helping their families to live a better life.

The story and the direction were excellent. The opening number immediately captured the attention of the audience as the characters recited their hopes and aspirations. The ply provided a good mix of comedy, drama and musical. It made me realize that I am more blessed compared to other people. It motivates me to extend help to kids who are hopeful that their lives become better.

"La Ezperanza Encendida" was written by Layeta P. Bucoy, a professor at the University of the Philippines, Los Baños teaching Creative Writing, Playwriting and several literature and writing subjects. Marco Alfino "Kiko" V. Miranda directs the play. He is a graduate of UP Los Baños and currently teaches at the Mass Communications Department of Ateneo de Zamboanga University. The stage play was produced by the AGAPE Human Development Foundation, Inc., World Vision Development Foundation, Social Awareness and Community Service Involvement (SACSI) Office, Center for Performing and Visual Arts of ADZU and in cooperation with the Mass Communications Department of ADZU and Hon. Congressman Erbie Fabian.

Sen. Manny Villar graces Zamboanga Regatta 2008

Sen. Manny Villar officially started the Zamboanga City Regatta competition yesterday, October 5, 2008 at the RT Lim Boulevard. The competition is one of the main highlights of the annual festival. Regatta means a rowing race of boats. In Zamboanga, vinta is the boat used in the race.

A vinta is a boat with colorful sails. In Wikipedia, vinta is described as a vessel of ancient heritage used by Muslims in the large island of Mindanao, Southern Philippines. The colorful sails represents the colorful culture of the Muslim community hundreds of years ago. The vinta is commonly used for inter-island transport of people and goods.

The gloomy weather did not hinder more than 100 vintas from participating in the event. Thousand of residents and tourists also witnessed the very unique competition in the world.

In my opinion, this year's Zamboanga Hermosa Festival marketing plan is not working well. Local residents and tourist had difficulty in getting the correct schedule of activities for the festivities. Posters has not yet been released and the tarpaulins were displayed just yesterday. MRT Trip

The easiest way to commute in Metro Manila is to take the train. Considering the volume of traffic in EDSA, going from Mandaluyong to Makati would be easier through the MRT. Since majority of the students that I brought in Manila for a trip are first-time visitors, I decided to let them experience how to ride on the train.

The MRT ride was a funny experience for the students. One student disembark in a wrong station. Thankfully, he was able to come back in before the door closed. Despite the fun, the students realized that living in Manila is not that easy. Riding the MRT specially during the peak time was very difficult for them.

Art in the Mall

Several weeks ago, I had the chance to travel to Manila to chap eron my students who are going to attend the Graphika Manila International Multimedia Design Conference. It was a hush-hush organizing of the trip due to some difficulties with bureaucracy. However, I was able to create a good itinerary for the activities that we can do to maximize our stay in Manila.

The first activity after arriving in the Metro was to visit art galleries. Since the students are taking Multimedia and Animation course, I decided that they be exposed to other types of designs and art. We went to see the art pieces displayed in the galleries that can be found on the upper floor of SM Mega Mall. Most of the students were inspired to see the art works. They got some ideas that they can use in creating digital artworks which are required in their portfolio development subject.

On my part, I was inspired to start painting again soon. I use to paint in watercolor when I was in High School. I wanted to also try other media but workload and other involvements hindered me. I hope to pursue painting in the next semester since it seems to be a little lenient on schedule.

Chabacano songfest on

Deadline for the 2008 Chabacano Song Festival, a highlight of the Grand Zamboanga Hermosa Festival is set for Friday, September 26.

Now on its 26th year, the chabacano song tilt is one of the city government's efforts to preserve the chabacano language, the only one of its kind in the country and entire Asia, earning Zamboanga the title as "Asia's Latin City".

The competition is the brain child of the late Mayor Maria Clara Lobregat, who initiated the tilt when she was still the president of the defunct First United Broadcasting Corporation (FUBC) in 1982.

Entries for the songfest are to be submitted not later than Sept. 26 (Friday), during office hours at the Office of the City Tourism at the Sunken Garden or at the Office of the Barangay Affairs in City Hall.

Any entry should be original in tune and lyrics in chabacano with only guitar or organ accompaniment during the contest proper. It should be at least and not more than 3 minutes.

The entry should be submitted for the first time and was not considered as an entry in previous chabacano song festivals; submitted with accomplished entry form of the contest and submitted with the corresponding copy of the musical chords and lyrics of the song within the prescribed period.

Audition and final elimination will be on Sept. 29, 2008 (Sunday) at the Jardin Maria Clara in Pasonanca.

Actual contest will be on October 9, 2008 at the Garden Orchid Hotel. Prizes at stake are P10, 000 for the first prize; P5, 000 for the second prize and P3, 000 for the third prize. The owner of the entry that will be selected as best in composition will get a prize of P5, 000.

All entries are considered an official property of the city government as the organizer of the contest and that the decisions of the board of judges are considered final. (City Hall PIO)

MILF Bruhaha

I had the scare of my life yesterday while traveling by bus from Dipolog to Zamboanga.

I had to go home to Dapitan last Sunday to attend to my father's 60th Birthday celebration the next day. It was a perfect schedule because Monday was declared holiday. I was planning to take the last trip of Rural Transit on Monday. However, news broke out that the MILF rebels ambushed 2 Rural Transit buses in Lanao. I had to cancel my trip and decided to take a morning bus on Tuesday.

Everyone was "praning" while in the bus. When we reached the Municipality of Ipil, we heard a siren from a police patrol car. I can remember the faces of the people on the bus as they checked what was happening outside. Good thing it was just a motorcade.

When we reach an area almost in Zamboanga, I observed that there were people in military uniform. It's quite alarming to see that it is now very difficult to distinguish a military personell from an MILF rebel because they both were the same camoflage uniforms. My judgement tells me that the men scattered in the place were rebels.

Fortunately, I came back to Zamboanga safe and sound. Everyone in Zamboanga are fearful on what might happen in the coming days. I only blame the goverment for putting us in this situation. People in Mindanao has always been the government's sacrificial lamb. But I know that someday, somehow things will change.

Project Runway Philippines

The Philippine installment of Project Runway made its tv debut last July 30 on ETC Channel. The Bravo TV franchise aims to give Filipino designers break in to the fashion industry.

I really liked the first episode. The whole production gave justice to the original version of this hit reality tv show. The host was superb. The treatment of the loft clips is unique. It reminds me of the indie film-type of camera movements. The designs of are appeal to the Filipino taste yet world-class. Watch the clip below for the episode 1 runway show.

Kinabayo Festival 2008

I just came from a 3-day vacation from Dapitan City, which is also known as the Shrine City of the South. Last July 25, 2008, Dapitan celebrated its annual Kinabayo Festival as part of the Feast of Señor Santiago or St. James.

Kinabayo Festival is a colorful celebration re-enacting the Spanish-Moorish wars, mainly the Battle of Covadonga where the Spanish forces under General Pelagio took their last stand against Saracan. They were able to overturn the tide through the miraculous spirit of St. James. The addition of local color and modernism has made this annual celebration a popular attraction which brings thousands of tourists to the Dapitan City.

The Festival was highlighted by a street dance and showdown which were participated by 3 teams. Barangay Bagting of Dapitan City bagged the grand prize.

Trip to Laguna

It has been a while since my last post. I was busy for the past months and had difficulty in updating this blog. But I'm back now. :) Earlier, I got a text message from my student because he liked this travel blog. I was encouraged to keep on posting here.

Last week, I went to San Pablo, Laguna to attend a strategic planning session of the Animation Council of the Philippines. It was my second time to be in Laguna. The first time was six years ago when my friend Patrick and I had a joy ride towards Los Baños.

The planning was conducted in Casa San Pablo which is a haven at the heart of San Pablo City, Laguna. I liked the place especially the interior design of the dining area. Sculptures and artworks provided it with interest. There was also a swimming pool for enjoyment. Unfortunately, we had no time to savor the stay as the planning schedule was so tight and we only had to be there for just an overnight.

Before we left San Pablo, we passed by Kusina ni Salud for a sumptuous lunch. It was my first time to try carabeef which was cooked in "gata" (coconut milk). Aside from the delicious food in Kusina ni Salud, I also enjoyed taking pictures of the sculpt works displayed in the restaurant.

For sure, I'm going to be back in Laguna in the future. Hopefully, I will have enough time to visit its beautiful scenery and enjoy what it has to offer.

New 7 Wonders of the World

Chocolate Hills

The Chocolate Hills is an unusual geological formation in Bohol, Philippines. It is composed of around 1,268 perfectly cone-shaped hills of about the same size, spread over an area of more than 50 square kilometres (19 sq mi). They are covered in green grass that turns brown during the dry season, hence the name.

The Chocolate Hills is a famous tourist attraction of Bohol. It is featured in the provincial flag and seal to symbolize the abundance of natural attraction in the province. It is in the Philippine Tourism Authority's list of tourist destinations in the Philippines; it has been declared the country's 3rd National Geological Monument and proposed for inclusion in the UNESCO World Heritage list.

Tubbataha Reef

The Tubbataha Reef Marine Park covers 33,200 ha, including the North and South Reefs. It is a unique example of an atoll reef with a very high density of marine species; the North Islet serveing as a nesting site for birds and marine turtles. The site is an excellent example of a pristine coral reef with a spectacular 100-m perpendicular wall, extensive lagoons and two coral islands.

Mayon Volcano

Mayon Volcano is an active volcano in the Philippines on the island of Luzon, in the province of Albay in the Bicol Region. Its almost perfectly-shaped cone is considered by some to be the Philippine equivalent of Mount Fuji in Japan.[citation needed] The volcano is situated 15 kilometres northwest of Legazpi City.

Mayon is classified by volcanologists as a stratovolcano (composite volcano). Its symmetric cone was formed through alternate pyroclastic and lava flows. Mayon is the most active volcano in the country, having erupted over 47 times in the past 400 years.[citation needed] It is located between the Eurasian and the Philippine Plate, at a convergent plate boundary: where a continental plate meets an oceanic plate, the lighter continental plate overrides the oceanic plate, forcing it down; magma is formed where the rock melts. Like other volcanoes located around the rim of the Pacific Ocean, Mayon is a part of the "Pacific Ring of Fire".

A Free Trip to Boracay. WOW!

Boracay is in my list of places that I hope to visit this year. I haven't been there, but I know that the island is so great that thousands or millions of tourists visit the place each year. Christine "Happy Slip" Gambito has finally arrived in the Philippines to serve as a Tourism Ambassador. I'm actually very excited for her. I've seen her recent video and saw the other side of Christine. She brought laughter to us a lot of times, but in that video she just expressed how she truly felt coming to her parents' homeland.

It really amazes me that Filipinos living abroad feel proud about our country. Happy Slip serves as a reminder for us Filipinos living here in the Philippines to appreciate the country even more. "Dancing Inmates" perform Sinulog Dance

A request was made to allow the dancing inmates to perform in the Cebu Sports Complex but to no avail. Personally, I understand the point of the City Mayor for not approving the request. Many people fear in coming to Zamboanga due to "peace and order problem". A lot of them are not really aware of the beauty it poses and how peaceful the place is. This miseducation is basically brought about the negative image portrayed in the different networks.

Philippine Tourism Industry Revenue for 2007

Tourist arrivals breach three-million mark in 2007

STATE TOURISM data show that 8.7% more tourists arrived last year over 2006, spending 40% more than total tourist expenditures recorded in 2006.

The summary of the Tourism department’s yearend report showed that tourist arrivals breached the 3-million mark after staying within the 2-million territory from 2004-2006.

Specifically, number of arriving tourists rose 8.7% to 3.091 million last year from 2.843 million in 2006.

The 2006 figure was 8.4% more than 2.623 million in 2005, which in turn was 14.4% more than the 2.291 million recorded in 2004.

Tourists last year spent a total of $4.885 billion, or 40% more than the $2.622-billion tourist spending recorded in 2006. Last year’s amount was also nearly a third more than the $3.782-billion target set for 2007.

The 2006 amount was 17% more than the $2.236 billion in 2005, which in turn was 12% more than the $1.99 billion recorded in 2004.

The Tourism department targets tourist spending to rise to $5.8 billion this year.

The top 10 tourist sources last year were:

South Korea, with arrivals increasing 14.2% year-on-year to 653,310, accounting for 21.1% of total tourist arrivals;
US, rising 2% to 578,983 and accounting for 18.7%;
Japan, actually dropping 6.4% to 395,012 and accounting for 12.8%;
China, rising 18% to 157,601 and accounting 5.1%;
Australia, rising 11% to 112,466 and accounting for 3.6%;
Taiwan, dropping 2.4% to 112,206 and also accounting for 3.6%;
Hong Kong, rising 16.3% to 111,948 and accounting also for 3.6%;
Singapore, rising 15.9% to 94,008 and accounting for 3%;
Canada, rising 13.4% to 91,308 and also accounting for 3%; and
the United Kingdom, increasing 16.3% to 79,670 and making up 2.6%.
Russians posted the biggest jump, doubling (128%) from 2006.

The GMA News, Saksi, reported that the tourism industry earned higher than the BPO industry. It's amazing to know that foreigners really love our country. I hope all Filipinos will also find our country beautiful.

3 Philippine Cities: top Asian Cities in the Future

The capital cities in Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao are included in the promising Asian cities according to the Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) Magazine. The cities of Quezon, Cebu and Davao were listed as 7th, 8th and 10th respectively. Hong Kong earns the title of Asian city of the future with Sydney picking up the race.

While browing FDI's website, I also learned that Naga City was named as the most cost-effective city and Davao was awarded as runner-up. Naga's low cost labor and facilities yet world-class offer investors a good bargain.

Kudos to MMDA's Pink Lines

This time, the chair of the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) is bent on painting all the sidewalks of major and secondary roads around the metropolis with two-inch pink lines.

His objective: stopping drivers from parking their cars on the sidewalks.

Aptly dubbed the "Pink Line Project," the undertaking would be part of MMDA's effort to strictly enforce illegal parking laws, Fernando said.

"Let us now return the sidewalks to the people who face the risk of being sideswiped by running vehicles because they cannot walk freely on the sidewalks," he said in a statement. "This is the best way to instill discipline in some uncaring people who disregard the law and wantonly inconveniencing their fellowmen."

December 2007 Dapitan Tour Guiding

Last Christmas, two (2) of my students from Zamboanga City visited Dapitan City. Since I was at home during the holidays, I volunteered to tour them around the city. Jet is from Dipolog City so she has been to some of the places. On the other hand, Franz who is originally from Manila had a great time since it was her first time in Dapitan.

Our first stop was the Rizal Park. During the 4-year exile of Jose Rizal in Dapitan City, he was able to buy this property when he won in a lottery. In this area, he was able to built a clinic, a school and a home.

Our next stop was the St. James Parish Church which was built by the Jesuits in 1883 during the Spanish period in the Philippines by the Jesuits. The church symbolizes the early Christianization of Dapitan. It still looks the same as the building where Rizal heard mass. Jet and Franz had the opportunity of climbing the "veranda" to be able to see the top view of the church interior.

Right across the church is the relief map of Mindanao which is another landmark in the city. The visitors were able to trace the path they took from Zamboanga City to Dapitan City. The map is part of the City Plaza which Rizal helped designed. In fact, some of the trees that Rizal planted are still standing in the plaza. I also showed them the Dapitan City Cultural and Multi-Purpose Center. During our visit, carpenters were preparing the stage for the Mutya ng Handuraw search.

A few meters from the city plaza are the Spanish style houses. I took them at the ancestral home of the Adaza's which serves as a satellite office of the Department of Tourism for Region IX.

Our next stop was the Gloria de Dapitan which a commercial and recreational complex. We rode on a tricycle going to Gloria. Franz was amazed with how much the tricycle ride costs. In Dapitan, the tricy fare is only PhP6 within the city proper. It is very cheap compared with the tricy ride in Zamboanga.

It was unfortunate that we went to Gloria de Dapitan during day time when many of the shops and establishments were closed. Therefore, I just toured them around the complex and took souvenir pictures.

Our last destination before heading back to our house is the Rotonda in Lawaan wherein a big galleon was constructed. In my last post, I mentioned that the galleon was constructed for the Christmas. I made an erratum because it was actually built for the Handuraw Festival celebration.

After the tour, we went back to our house to rest for a while. Jet and Franz headed to Dipolog for another adventure during the holidays. :)

Travel Guide: Zamboanga City to Dipolog City

If you're from Zamboanga City and planning to go to Dipolog City, here are some tips for your travel:

The bus terminal is located at Brgy. Guiwan. If you're going there by tricycle, the usual price from pueblo to the terminal is PhP 40.
If you're not used to eating in carenderias, bring your "baon".
The trip is usually 6 to 8 hours. Your bottom and your legs may feel numb. Thus, don't forget to stretch every now and then.
Bring coins for comfort room fees. Urination usually cost Php3.
First trip is at 3AM and last trip is at 8PM.

The Relief Map of Mindanao

When going to Dapitan City, one should not miss to visit the relief map of Mindanao which is just across the St. James Church. The map has a total land area of roughly 900 square meters done by Dr. Jose Rizal with the assistance of Fr. Francisco de Paula Sanchez, S.J. It was intended as a motivating device for teaching history and geography to townsfolk.

Dapitan City is again celebrating its Handuraw Festival. Handuraw Festival aims to remember the life of Dr. Jose Rizal's life while being exiled in Dapitan from 1892-1896. Unfortunately, I have scheduled commitments during the said celebration so I cannot get some photos and footage of the events. However, if your near Dapitan, try to join the events. Basag Palayok (Hit the Pot)

Basag Palayok is a traditional Filipino game that is being played during fiestas, birthdays and other celebrations. The player is blindfolded while trying to hit a pot or palayok. The palayok is filled with prizes for the spectators to get after the pot is hit. Basag palayok was played in our recent Christmas party. It was fun.

Christmas Decorations in Zamboanga City

The plaza and city hall of Zamboanga is adorned with colorful lights. If you come to visit the place, you will forget that you are in Zamboanga. It resembles the bright lights in Paris and the festive atmosphere of Mexico.

Christmas in Zamboanga is celebrated by friends and families regardless of religious background. I can remember my college years when my classmates and I used to exchange gift and celebrate our Christmas party at a Muslim home.

Dapitan's Preparation for Christmas

This picture was taken during my recent trip to Dapitan City. The City Goverment of Dapitan started decorating the place in preparation for the Christmas season. A lot of local and foreign tourists are expected to visit the city in December. In a rotonda in Lawaan, they constructed a huge replica of a galleon. When this picture was taken, the carpenters were still finishing the construction. I assume that this galleon is already finished and lighted. In my next trip back to Dapitan, I will post a picture of the finished galleon.

PS: The galleon is only several meters away from our house. :)

Almost 15-Hour Ride: Dapitan City to Zamboanga City via Ozamis and Zamboanga del Sur

I agreed to serve as an examiner for the entrance examination for Ateneo de Zamboanga University. For this trip, I had to travel from Zamboanga to Dapitan (my hometown) and conduct an exam in Dipolog last November 19, 2007. After a day, I had to go to Molave, Zamboanga del Sur for another set of exam.

Since it was my first time to go to Molave. Let me take you to my trip to the friendly municipality in Zamboanga del Sur.

5:00 AM- The Sergio Osmeña route was nearer to Molave, yet it is dangerous as it is prone to landslides. Due to the continuous pouring of rain in the region for days now, I was forced to take the Ozamis route to go to the Municipality of Molave. Since the bus for Ozamis passes by Dapitan, I just waited along the road near our house.

8:00 AM- I arrived in Ozamis City. My impression about the place is good. I liked the wide streets and big bus terminal.

I was anxious since I was already late for the Entrance Exam in Molave and I was informed that the examinees were already waiting.

9:45AM- I arrived in Molave and rushed to Molave Vocational Technical School. Tricycles are not popular in the place. Therefore, I was forced to ride a "sikad-sikad" which is a cart attached on a bicycle. I was very apologetic when I arrived at the testing site. Fortunately, the test coordinators and examinees understood the situation.

12:45 PM- The Entrance Test was finished and I rushed to a nearby restaurant to take my "brunch". After taking a meal, I immediately went to the bus station. I wished I could have more time to spend in Molave. My first impression about the place is good. There are a lot of business establishments in the place and it looks progressive and it maintains to protect its environment. I was already heading back to Zamboanga City. This time, I decided to take the Pagadian route as advised by the staff of the transit. During my ride to Pagadian City, I observed that a lot of schools in the Zamboanga del Sur embrace the concept of a "Child-Friendly Environment" (CFE). I was reminded of a video documentary I edited for DSWD. I haven't seen any other province in the region who takes the CFE program seriously.

3:00 PM- I arrived in Pagadian City. I was amazed with their tricycles. It was my first time to see a tricycle cart that is so inclined as if it faces the sky. :) I was informed that their tricycles are designed in that way because Pagadian is a plateau.

4:00 PM - I boarded in a bus going to the Municipality of Ipil. Most of the time, I was asleep. The bus stopped over a certain place for dinner. I didn't have the appetite to take a meal but went down the bus to pee. Unfortunately, I stepped on a mud pile which I thought was a wet rock. I had to clean my mud-soaked shoe.

8:00 PM- I arrived in Ipil and transfered to a bus going to Zamboanga. I ate 2 boiled eggs. Again, I was asleep most of the time.

11:30 PM- I finally arrived in Zamboanga City.

One thing I didn't like about the travel is the quality of restrooms that are provided by the bus terminals. The PhP2 to PhP3 fee that they ask is not worthy. All of the restrooms that I was able to used are very dirty and stinky. Another thing is the implementation of the No Smoking policy of the bus company. The staff of the transit allows passengers to smoke on board their bus. Hopefully, these problems can be solved to provided customers a better experience. :) However, in general, I enjoyed the ride as it gave me a lot of firsts.

My First Trip to Molave, Zamboanga del Sur

Later, I'll be off to Dipolog and Dapitan for an official travel leave to administer the annual College Entrance Test in St. Vincent's College in Dipolog City. I grabbed this task because it's an opportunity for me to visit home for free. hehe...

Right after the test in Dipolog, I'll be going to Molave, Zamboanga del Sur. It's going to be my first time in the said municipality. I've made several research about the place. During my previous trip home, the bus driver informed me that it is around 3 to 4-hour trip from Dipolog. According to Wikipedia, Molave is a 1st class municipality with a population of 45,082 people in 8,470 households.

I am looking forward to be in Molave. I hope that I will be able to discover something new from the place.

Pabitin

During my recent trip back in my hometown, Dapitan City, I was able to attend the birthday party of my niece. Since it was a kids' party, my sister-in-law prepared a game for my niece's guest. The game that she prepared is called "pabitin".

Pabitin is a game wherein goodies are hung on a wooden or bamboo frame that is held by a rope. When the pabitin is lowered, the kids competes in grabbing the goodies.

Paper Bag, Bayong or Plastic Bag

Plastic bags consumed this year:

Everyday, when we buy bread for breakfast or a kilo of rice for lunch, usually the goods are placed in a plastic bag. There have been a buzz on the ill effects of using plastic bags as they are produced from non-renewable petroleum resources. Yes, plastic bags can be recycled but not as easy as paper. The usual reason of clogged sewerage in the streets in the Philippines is the bundle of plastics which cannot decompose easily.

Several groups propose the use of paper bags as an alternative for plastic bags. Paper bags easily decompose and do not clog the sewerage. However, paper bags come from trees. Therefore, the impact on the production of paper bags on forests is huge.

Another alternative is the use of reusable bags. In the Philippines, the use of bayong has been done since time immemorial. A bayong, is made of coconut or other natural materials. The coconut leaves are being woven to make it as strong container of goods. The coconut leaves are renewable. Usually, the bayong is being used by Filipinos for buying vegetables from the market.

Hopefully, there can be a law in the Philippine against the use of plastic bags and promoting the use of bayong.

Zamboanga Hesmosa Festival 2007 & Fiesta Pilar

I missed some of the events of the Zamboanga Hermosa Festival and Fiesta Pilar on October 12, 2007 because I was in Manila for a seminar.

One of the events during the festival is the Street Dance competition. Since Zamboanga changed it's promotional identity to being the Asia's Latin City, the Street Dance competition features costumes that mix the colors that reflects the vinta and the Hispanic inspired flowing skirts. The said festivity is similar to the Mardi Gras of the Latin countries.

Aside from missing the Street Dance Contest, I also missed the Fiesta Pilar. The fiesta is a tribute to the Lady of Pilar. My father is one of the devotees of the Lady of Pilar. He made a promise to light a candle in For Pilar every the fiesta. Since I am the only son who is based here in Zamboanga, I was the one who goes with him during fiestas to light candles. Unfortunately, I missed that this year.

There are still several activities that are on-going and will be conducted in the coming days. There are still time to catch up with the festivities. :)

Regatta de Zamboanga: Vinta Racing Contest

One of the highlights of the Zamboanga Hermosa Festival is the annual Vinta Racing Competition. During the competition, a number of colorful vintas line up the boulevard of Zamboanga City to take part in this fun event. I was glad to be there to capture the moment.

If you happen to visit Zamboanga during the Hermosa Festival, check the city's official website for the Vinta Racing competition. I assure you that you will enjoy the sight of these colorful sails which you can only see in Zamboanga.

If you are looking for a place to reminisce the past but at the same time enjoy modern amenities, I recommend you to visit my hometown, Dapitan City.

Around the City Plaza are structures that were preserved to give tourists a feel of the Spanish era. St. James Parish church which was built in the 18th century still bears the original architectural design. Several ancestral houses are also commissioned by the City Tourism to be preserved.

At the City's boulevard, which is around 10 minutes away from the City plaza (and around 2 minutes away from our house) is an entertainment complex that has a modern cockpit arena, restaurants, video arcade, bowling alley, carnival and clubs. Local and foreign tourists can enjoy their night by hanging out in this area.

I'm a Monkey, I love Bananas

I'm a monkey. I was born during the year of the monkey based on the Chinese calendar. I do not know if it has something to do why I love eating bananas so much. lol... It has become my regular routine to buy a "sipi" of banana every Sunday and cook it as fried banana or locally called "rebusao". During weekdays, I take fried bananas during snack time. This snack looks like french fries coated with sugar.I did a little research on bananas. Whfoods.com talks about the history and benefits from bananas. According to the site, "bananas are thought to have originated in Malaysia around 4,000 years ago. From there, they spread throughout the Philippines and India." The fruit is still widely grown in the Philippines up to this day. Western Mndanao is one of the major producers of bananas as it has hectares of plantation in Zamboanga del Norte, Zamboanga del Sur and Zamboanga Sibugay.Aside from the taste of banana, I am fond of eating this fruit for its health benefits. Whfoods.com enumerated the benefits we can get from bananas.

Small Sta. Cruz Island in Zamboanga City

Last September 23, 2007, I had the chance to visit the small Sta. Cruz Island. Although I was still sick during that time, I woke up at 6:00 AM to go to Ateneo de Zamboanga University where the group will be meeting. I was invited by my students who were taking up swimming as their PE subject. I chose not to miss the opportunity because it would be my first time to go to the small island.

Sta Cruz Island is 15 to 20- minute boat ride from Lantaka Hotel. The rate of the round trip boat ride is around P150 to P200, depending on the number of people. We were all excited when we were on the boat. It was the first time for some of the students to ride on a boat. You cannot see on their face any worry but instead they were eager
to get to the island.

We were all in awe when we see the clear waters when we disembark from the boat. Aside from the clear water, the island also boast of its pinkish sand. The pinkish sand is due to the mixture of white sand and the fragments of red corals which are washed out from the sea.

There is also an extensive and varied underwater life of coral heads and rocks in the island which is conducive for snorkeling and scuba diving. I was lucky that day because Mr. Cuaresma, the PE instructor of my students brought with him snorkeling gadgets and equipment. Gener Cerna and Ritcher Vecina who are members of a diving club in Zamboanga were there to assist us.

Near the small Sta. Cruz Island is the big Sta. Cruz Island. It is quite amazing to see that from the small island, there is a sand bar that is protruding towards the big island. During low tide, the sand bar can be seen and you can actually walk on it. Though, in my opinion, no one should go to the tip of the sand bar because the water is very unpredictable. You'll never know that the water has already risen.

At 1:00 PM, we were already heading back to the Zamboanga's mainland.

I'm planning to go back to Sta. Cruz Island during the semestral break. :)
